The Gift of Noticing

The Gift of Noticing

My house is now poised for action: waiting to spring open its doors for the clown car of kids about to arrive. The siblings and plus ones and best friends all want to come here for winter break. We’ll be busting at the seams with 10 young adults—who are tall and energetic and take up all the cushions on the couches and eat up all the food in a locust consumption style. There will be laughter and games and snap chats and music and loud discussions about politics and travel and technology and Netflix.

When my kids were young, I poured over toy catalogs and ordered all my gifts over the phone. I looked forward to the day they opened these presents I’d carefully chosen with their happiness in mind.

Today—my adults—I’ve felt the shift coming—it’s not about the presents under a tree. The event of the holiday is not what it once was. It’s a chance to all share square footage, it’s memory lane and brand new experiences and optimism for the future.

The best gift we give each other is noticing.

There are questions about what each person is up to, what aspirations, who they are with now, and comments on hair cuts and new games and someone’s changed fashion sense.

The new and revised opinions, the changes from vegetarian to meat eating and back again, the hobbies acquired, the shared big kid toys, the shows we’ve binge-watched in each other’s absence and the one movie (Coco!) we’re saving to watch together: this is the stuff of holiday time now.

It’s too easy for me to drop into yesterday or tomorrow and forget about today—noticing all that it represents now, in the lives of my ever-evolving people who don’t even hold a candle to what I wished for them—so far do they exceed my imagination. The rich, nuanced, full-bodied unique people they’ve become—they are the greatest gift to me and I want to open it, and notice all the contents—shake them out on the carpet and enjoy them one bit at a time, commenting, affirming, sympathizing, and enjoying.

Here’s to a season of noticing all the loveliness that is your family: even if there is a hem of pain or a backstitch of loss. Especially to those of you rearranging family this holiday—I know that challenge too and maybe you can notice a few new things like: space to feel, time to do something for yourself, peace, rebirth.

Rooting for everyone to have a holiday filled with awareness and grace.

Podcast: The Complete Season Three

Brave Writer Season Three Podcasts

Season 3 of the Brave Writer podcast surpassed even my expectations! In my interviews with friends, educators, and even my wonderful mom, we explored the brave shifts that helps us to be better parents, better homeschoolers, and better people.

Each week features someone who has had an impact on how I love and learn. These guests are my personal heroes as well as skilled practitioners I’ve long admired. We discussed the culture of homeschooling and how its changed over the last four decades, we looked at the impact of cancer and the death of a child on our ability to home educate, we talked about education reform and how to create a homeschool space that is filled with light and coziness, and I got to talk to one of our Brave Writer instructors as well as one of our Homeschool Alliance coaches (and so much more).

The season kicked off with Susan Wise Bauer and wrapped up with Karen O’Connor (my dear mom). Listen, bring tissues (some of these interviews are pretty poignant), and implement the practical ideas that may help you re-shape your homeschool into something gorgeous and personal.

Tune in to the Brave Writer podcast on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher (or your app of choice), and here on the Brave Writer blog.

Happy Birthday, Jane Austen!

Happy Birthday Jane Austen SALE
In celebration of Jane Austen’s birthday (December 16th, 1775), the Boomerang based on her novel, Pride and Prejudice, is:

HALF PRICE till Sunday, Dec. 17 midnight ET ($5.95)!

OFFER HAS EXPIRED

Born on December 16th, 1775, Jane Austen has become one of the most enduring staples of English literature. Her works have inspired films, books, and flurries of essays and other analysis. But in her own lifetime, Jane Austen published her novels anonymously (some with the famous by line: “By a Lady”) and they brought her little fame or recognition.

Published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice is arguably Austen’s most famous work and has been adapted (to screen and other mediums) numerous times. A romance novel and a social commentary, it follows its protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet, as she navigates English social restrictions, a complicated family, and of course the seemingly antagonistic attentions of a certain Mr. Darcy.

Austen’s novels are known for their critique of English society and commentary on the difficulties of women being dependent upon making good marriages for financial stability and happiness. Although her heroines live forever in the imaginations of her readership, very little is known of the woman herself. The details of Austen’s life remain murky due in part to family members destroying many of her letters. Only a handful survive to this day, making the interpretation of the life of Jane Austen somewhat difficult.

Most of what remains of Jane Austen is what we find in her novels; a sharp ironic wit, social critique, and unabashed romance for good measure. These qualities and so much more have ensured that Jane Austen’s novels are still avidly read to this day.

So, celebrate Jane Austen’s birthday and take advantage of this special offer today!

Also, if you’d like to buy a copy of the novel, it’s available through Amazon: Pride and Prejudice

Boomerang

This Boomerang is also part of the Early English Boomerang collection!

The Boomerang is a digital downloadable product that features copywork and dictation passages from a specific read aloud novel. It is geared toward 7th to 10th graders (ages 12—advanced, 13-15) and is the indispensable tool for Brave Writer parents who want to teach language arts in a natural, literature-bathed context.
