2019-2020 Arrows and Boomerangs

Brave Writer 2019-2020 Arrows and Boomerangs

The new Arrow and Boomerang book lists have dropped! What a party!

If you did not catch the big reveal live, you can watch the REPLAY here or on the Brave Writer Facebook page.

Why the big party?

The big reveal is exciting because these are:

  • Books your family will read aloud together and treasure all year.
  • Books that naturally teach writing mechanics and introduce literary elements.

Here at Brave Writer, we take the selection of these 20 book titles Very Seriously! All year, we read, discuss, and delight in the year’s latest fiction as well as relishing the classics. We:

  • aim for diversity of authorship and protagonists.
  • incorporate a variety of genres: fantasy to the classics.
  • carefully orchestrate the sequence of the books.
  • balance book length against the holiday demands of a given month.
  • alternate moving, poignant books with silly, lighthearted books.
  • launch the year with a sure-fire winner and end with a warmhearted one.

By the time we’ve settled on a book list, we’re chomping at the bit to share it with you!

This year’s Arrow list is all brand new, and the Boomerang list features only two re-boots. You can expect a lively, inspired reading journey!

About the Arrow and Boomerang

The Arrow (3rd-6th) and the Boomerang (8th-11th) are your specially crafted monthly guides to teaching literature and the mechanics of writing.

These programs include 10 month-long guides that feature:

  • exciting read aloud novels each month,
  • copywork and dictation,
  • literary elements,
  • Big Juicy Discussion/Think Piece questions,
  • and Book Club Party School ideas.

A year’s worth of curriculum (10 month-long guides) for one low price!
When you purchase, you will be invited to a Private Facebook Group for year-long members.

The Brave Writer Arrow and Boomerang guides use living literature to bring writing mechanics to life.

A year of adventure, heart-break, humor, tenderness, history, and fantasy await you!

4 *NEW* Online Writing Classes

Brave Writer Online Classes

A new school year and four new online classes!

Thinking back on the last few months, when were your children the most engaged in learning? Be it a new card game, the latest shark video, or the recently built beaver dam in the backyard creek, your kids readily explore learning opportunities that tap into their passionsand curiosity about the world.

Passion and curiosity are also key components of the writing process. When children dive deep into their obsessions, the writing that emerges is compelling to read. These words represent a child’s vibrant inner mind life transcribed on the page. Who wouldn’t want to read that?

Your young authors want what all writers want: the chance to choose what to write about, to write on their terms. When children take the reins, they stop dragging their feet and complaining about writing. And their writing comes to life!

We’ve created four new online classes that will set your writers’ imaginations on fire!

Literary Analysis: Born a Crime

Teen comedy lovers who watch all the late-night show clips on YouTube will be excited to take this new class.

Trevor Noah is a point of curiosity. What’s the story behind this South African that reigns over The Daily Show? His incredible journey will captivate your teens as they read this hilarious and poignant autobiography.

Class discussion is sure to be riveting!

Book/Movie Duo

Which was better, the book or the movie?

Let’s talk about it!

Book/Movie Duo is a class like no other. Part literary discussion, part movie analysis, we will take your kids on an unforgettable journey as they explore favorite works of fiction. This class is designed primarily for ages 11-14, though older interested teens are welcome to join.

  • Sept 3 – Sept 27 The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) by Rick Riordan [Book, Movie]
  • Nov 4 – Dec 3 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling [Book, Movie]

Penning the Past

Back by popular demand!

Have you ever been intrigued by an old newspaper clipping, family photograph, or advertisement? Do you love to dive deep into historical periods as part of your homeschool experience? Perhaps you’ve longed to put yourself in a moment in history, to take a good look around, sample the food, talk to the passersby, and listen to all the local stories.

We have just the class for you to take this passion to a new level! Join us for a historical fiction writing experience like no other.

Songwriting

Close your eyes and think of your favorite song. What do you love about it? Perhaps it is the way words are tied to melody, or the story that is told, or how that song makes you feel when you listen to it on repeat. The job of the songwriter is to bring their story, told through song, to life.

We recognize that teens have much to say and that songwriting is a wonderful outlet for a young writer’s biggest ideas and deepest longings.

Music and lyrics—the bread and butter of the budding songwriter—will be the entry point for a class that uses poetry to examine the importance of powerful association and vivid vocabulary in songwriting.

Two Kinds of Driving

Your Ticket to Adventure

There are two kinds of driving in homeschool.

One: driving to the supermarket, Target, IKEA, the dentist, Home Depot, the pharmacy, Staples.

Two: driving to a park, the woods, the library, the zoo, a museum, soccer, skiing, the theater, a friend’s house, the beach, botanical gardens, an ice cream shop…

See the difference?

First category: distances should be short; time spent, also short. Don’t pile on and visit four in a row. Save some trips for solo outings (no kids). You might use Amazon and skip driving to stores sometimes.

Second category: boredom busters—they help kids transcend the life-locked feeling of four walls closing in. They expand your children’s world. They’re also great for Big, Juicy Conversations.

Possible Danger

Don’t use up all your car travel time on errands. Otherwise you may create resistance against longer trips to the really cool stuff (mountains, oceans, fossils, observatory, wild animal park, historic sites).

Remember, your car can be your ticket to adventure!
