Movie Fun for the Whole Family

Brave Writer Movie Fun

Have you ever thought of a movie as a text to study just as you would a novel?

Movies have all of the elements found in a book:

  • plot,
  • character development,
  • setting,
  • dialogue, and
  • writer’s craft (including literary devices).

And you can explore it all in under two hours!

While movies are not a one-to-one replacement for reading books, they have their own value.

Movies can:

  • expand cultural literacy.
  • offer fuel for big juicy conversations.
  • allow for a quick look at the unfolding of a plot arc.
  • reveal the plot and basic story elements so, later, the reader can sink into the genre and writing style of a difficult-to-read author.
  • enrich the reading experience.
  • provide an opportunity to compare and contrast.
  • inspire insights about both necessary and unnecessary changes made to fit the new medium (film).

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the power of movies!

Did you know you can provide your child with a rich learning experience by watching a movie and just selecting a few passages from the corresponding book to study?

You can! And what a way to wrap up the school year!

To make it easy, we’ve curated a list of books with movie companions and either a Dart, Arrow, or Boomerang to help you explore the book:

  • Because of Winn-Dixie – Rated: PG – Arrow
  • Book Thief, The – Rated: PG-13 – Boomerang

Podcast: Homeschool Unrefined with Maren Goerss & Angela Sizer

Brave Writer Podcast

Homeschooling should be an option for everyone. That doesn’t sound like a controversial statement, and yet many of us struggle to make our homeschool right for us and our family.

Maren Goerss and Angela Sizer are the dynamic duo behind Homeschool Unrefined, an inclusive and non-sectarian podcast and community all about keeping homeschool simple, real, and fun.

These friends of more than 20 years carry a breezy chemistry that bleeds into every topic they touch. They are both former public school teachers with master’s degrees in education and they want parents to know that homeschooling can be less about lesson-plans and more about nurturing the inherent, natural love of learning already within our kids.

Show Notes

The Mission of Homeschool Unrefined

Maren and Angela had a vision for homeschools that redefined the way people were approaching their family’s education. Their goal was straightforward: keep homeschool simple, real, and fun. With their educational background, they understood how kids learn and they wanted to encourage people to support that. A student-led philosophy is a better way to learn than a parent-led one.

Brave Learner Home: Dr. Diana Hill

Brave Learner Home

Do you ever feel stuck?

  • Do you sometimes see your homeschool, yourself, or your kids as not having the momentum or innovation to figure out how to break the logjam?
  • Are you invested—maybe not always productively invested— in a specific vision of “the way things need to be” or “the way things are”—or even, “the way I am?”

If your homeschooling has had elements of impasse, let Brave Learner Home help you get unstuck!

We’re bringing author and clinical psychologist Dr. Diana Hill to Brave Learner Home for our Master Class in June. She’ll help you explore core skills needed to build your psychological flexibility and compassion as a parent and home educator.

Diana and I realized that her Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) practices and my Brave Learner homeschooling and parenting practices are complementary.

In fact, Diana has been homeschooling her kids this year and has seen first-hand how brave learning encourages psychological flexibility and self-compassion—and vice versa!

She and her co-author have created a program for parents who want to:

  • stay present with their kids
  • act in ways that align with their values, even when life is difficult
  • use more effective parenting strategies
  • have greater family cohesion
  • have less spill-over effects of stress onto their kids

Psychological Flexibility and Self-Compassion

Brave Learner Home features two Master Class webinars!

  • Fostering Psychological Flexibility Webinar with Dr. Diana Hill
  • Cultivating Compassion Webinar with Dr. Diana Hill

Dr. Diana Hill is the co-author of the just-published ACT Daily Journal: Get Unstuck and Live Fully and cohost of the Psychologists Off the Clock podcast.

Learn how to blend of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy practices and Brave Learner practices in the following podcasts:

  • Brave Writer Podcast: Practicing Psychological Flexibility and ACT with Dr. Diana Hill
  • Psychologists Off the Clock Podcast: Educating Our Kids at Home with Julie Bogart

Get unstuck and live fully!

Brave Learner Home is your new reliable online community and coaching space to provide you the support you crave for a thriving homeschool.

Can’t wait to see you inside!

Stuff Goes Wrong

Brave Writer

Look for the good—it’s there, underneath the muddy shoes, next to the hidden math book that you can never find, behind the eyes of your tired emotional teen, inside where you can be gentle with yourself.

Stuff goes wrong. It’s part of the deal. What we can do is trust that underneath that momentary detour from productivity is the good.

Reset by finding the person you love. Be gentle with yourself too since it’s easy to take the blame.

Instead, take the invitation. Reframe your vision of your child when you see:

  • mischief,
  • sadness,
  • or challenge.

It’s okay if you call today a wash and look for it tomorrow. There’s plenty of time.

Be good to you.
