A Brave Writer's Life in Brief

Thoughts from my home to yours

Happy Birthday, Elizabeth George Speare!

The Witch of Blackbird PondIn celebration of Elizabeth George Speare’s birthday (born November 21, 1908), we’re making a special offer! The Boomerang for her novel, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, is:

HALF PRICE ($5.95) till Monday,
Nov. 23 at midnight EST

Elizabeth George Speare was born in Melrose, Massachusetts. She lived in New England until her death in 1994. Most of her novels, including The Witch of Blackbird Pond, take place in her native homeland. Inspired by the wild woods and headlands of her home, Speare began writing her stories at age 8. Later, she earned first a bachelor’s degree from Smith College and then a master’s in English from Boston University.

In 1936, she married a man named Alden Speare and they had two children together. From all accounts, Elizabeth never stopped writing and led a happy life with her family in Connecticut. Starting with her novel Calico Captive in 1957, Speare began her career. Her works are usually based on historical happenings, and, as in the case of her first book, the real journal of a girl captured by Indians.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Elizabeth’s second novel, was not based on a real person, but instead focused on the colonial time period and the fear of witchcraft that plagued Massachusetts. Speare won the 1959 Newberry Award for her work. Later, she would win another for her book The Bronze Bow. While not a prolific writer (she wrote four novels in her lifetime), Speare’s influence continues in a brilliant legacy of words.

“Everything in our lives leads up to everything else in our lives. So a moment in the present has a reference point, both in the past and in the future. I want you to know that you–as you are right now and as you ever will be–are fully enough for this moment.” ― Elizabeth George Speare

So, celebrate Elizabeth George Speare’s birthday and take advantage of this special offer today!

Also, if you’d like to buy a copy of the novel, it’s available through Amazon: The Witch of Blackbird Pond (affiliate link).

The Boomerang is a monthly digital downloadable product that features copywork and dictation passages from a specific read aloud novel. It is geared toward 7th to 10th graders (ages 12—advanced, 13-15) and is the indispensable tool for Brave Writer parents who want to teach language arts in a natural, literature-bathed context.

Friday Freewrite: A cotton-ball-cow?

Friday Freewrite: Cotton ball cow

Take an animal name then put another noun in front of it. It can be another animal, a plant, a food or anything else you can think of. Then take your new animal (which should sound completely bonkers!) and describe it in detail. What does it look like? How big is it? Where does it live? What does it eat? What is its personality like? Be creative!

Year 7, Day 1 by Amy, Hope is the Word

During tea time I suggested a little month-long Brave Writer project in which we will all collect words and phrases we read that capture our imaginations and gather them in a basket. I didn’t reveal to the girls what we’ll do with these later, but the whole notion was well-received…read more.

Homeschooling Around a Campfire by Erin, Homeschool Mentor Mom

Homeschooling Translated by Angela, Nurtured Roots

Ever feel like you aren’t doing enough in your homeschooling? Maybe it’s outside pressure or your own internal dialogue, but often we doubt that what we are doing with and for our children is enough. I know I do, until I slow down and examine just how naturally full of learning our days really are…read more.

“What feelings and memories do I associate with writing?”

What feelings and memories do I associate with writing

Hi Julie,

My beautiful daughter has just started studying your Help for High School. I thought you might like to read how she answered one of your questions.

We only changed one word “gust” to “stampede.”

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Carolyn

Poetry Teatime: Post-It Notes

Poetry Teatime

Hi Julie,

I’m Louise, mum of four poetry teatime lovers in the UK!

I thought I would share some pictures from our poetry tea time last week. We had a great time as usual, but this time we did something a bit different. I was inspired by someone on the Facebook group who spoke about using post it notes to write poetry. So I just added some to our table along with the cupcakes my youngest had made earlier in the day, and some new poetry books we had picked up from the library. I didn’t ‘make’ them write, but all wanted to give it a go!

Poetry Teatime

The small sized paper was so unthreatening and we had lots of different colours, so that made it fun too….We had a great time reading, writing and generally enjoying poetry.

Our work is now displayed on the wall for us to reread and appreciate throughout the week! What a fun and easy way to add a twist to our poetry teas!
