How We Select Boomerang Books

How We Select Boomerang Books

The Boomerang is Brave Writer’s monthly digital product that features a classic work of fiction each month. These novels are used to teach the mechanics of writing (grammar, spelling, punctuation, and literary elements) to students, usually 8th grade and above.

Sometimes Boomerang book selections contain mature language or themes, and parents have asked why we chose them. We share below how we select all the books on our list.

We pick books because we love them.

For instance, I’ve read The Thing About Jellyfish (and sobbed my little heart out at the end – such a tearjerker of mother’s love!). The novel is the story of a middle school aged girl struggling to process her grief at the loss of her best friend from childhood (death by possible drowning). The writing is gorgeous and the attention to detail, astonishing.

The books also represent the following criteria:

Quality literature (good writing).

For example, the 2017-18 books include Newbery Medal winners and National Book Award finalists.

Diverse authorship.

  • male/female
  • various viewpoints
  • diverse ethnicity
  • diverse time period
  • classics and modern

Both male and female protagonists.

Variety of genres.

  • poetry
  • prose
  • first person narrative
  • third person narrative
  • fantasy
  • historical fiction, etc.

That’s how books make it to our list.

What I often say to parents is this: select books that both feel right for your family (your values) and those that stretch you to include viewpoints you aren’t familiar with. Even when you disagree with something, it is worth it to read and discover how others see the world and to appreciate how their point of view feels to them. Reading a book is not the same as agreeing with a viewpoint.

That said, we encourage parents to make their own judgments. The Boomerang will address the writing. That’s our focus.

Brave Writer Boomerang Book ClubBoomerang Book Club

Teens are invited to join our virtual book club! Rather than reading in isolation, without the benefit of examining the writing and the layers of meaning novelists intend, The Boomerang Book Club provides a forum for that opportunity.

Take Away Insistence as a Tool

Take Away Insistence as a Tool

What if your child refuses to do any homeschool or writing projects?

A couple of things to consider:

  • What makes your child happy? Do that.
  • What helps her feel safe and heard? Do that.
  • What are his interests? Spend time with him there.
  • What are your interests? Spend time with those in front of your kids.

The subject areas can feel unrelated to real life and learning for kids at home. The more we insist they “do what they should” (even the fun stuff), the more they simply dig in their heels. But when we come to the table not with lessons, but with connection, something good happens.

I know you may wonder how the 3 R’s will emerge from that soup, but they will once you re-establish trust.

Take awau insistence as a tool

For instance, in writing—use it.

  • Write on the mirror with lipstick.
  • Send messages on the phone.
  • Toss a paper airplane into the room with a special note from you.
  • Load up your child’s door with Post-it notes and little facts and sayings.
  • Sit at the table and freewrite with your kids.
  • Brainstorm all the topics together and assign one to each other.
  • Let your child tell you what to write about.

Math: Make brownies and tea and then play with Cuisinaire rods and work out multiplication tables. Play board games. Play with dice. Bake. Quilt. Skip count with a jump rope.

Take away insistence as a tool. Pretend you are not allowed to insist.

Let go of the need to get your kids to do something and start looking for opportunities to be with them in their joy, celebrating the learning that is happening right in front of you that you didn’t orchestrate.

The BW Gazette

The BW Gazette

The Brave Writer Gazette!

This Brave Writer student publication showcases the work of the students from The Scoop: The Art of Journalism, our journalism online class for teens!

In the four-week course, students

  • learned about the elements of reporting and news writing as they evaluated the newsworthiness of stories,
  • interviewed sources, crafted “leads” and “nutgraphs,”
  • chose supporting quotes and so much more!

The Scoop online class is taught by Samantha Burtner, who is our first Brave Writer student to return as an instructor!

Samantha is an enthusiastic journalist, writer, and editor who appreciates the fine nuances of language, the demanding details of grammar, and the beauty of clear and concise prose.
BW Gazette From one of our students:

Dear Ms. Samantha,

Thank you so much for the greatest class ever, and getting everybody’s articles published in The BW Gazette. (Please get another journalism class going!)

So happy to see my article in print, and I’m currently working on getting it into another homeschool magazine. (Hopefully….)

Did I say I was so happy? I am ecstatic right now!!!!!!

Yay. Thank you.

-Elena

We are proud of what our Brave Writer students have accomplished! Please feel free to check out their work!

Note: The views expressed in The BW Gazette articles are not necessarily those of Brave Writer.
