Poetry Teatime: Togetherness, beauty, simplicity, and health

Poetry Teatime

I have always loved tea. As a family, we have had a practice of drinking many different types of herbal teas throughout the year. It is a much loved habit that I “blame” on my “genetics.” My mother is from the West Indies and went to nursing school in England, and my father is Scottish. I suppose it was only a matter of time before I fell in love with a more “official” tea time.

Poetry Teatime

This year, I was introduced to Brave Writer, and knew that her philosophy of teaching and learning fit perfectly with what our family had already implemented in our lives. Nature journaling, movie night, poetry tea times – I was in heaven reading about all the ways to encourage and get my children excited about writing! We had our first tea as a birthday party for my youngest. Our closest friends (who we introduced to Brave Writing) came over and celebrated the day, while also learning some fun etiquette in the process.

Poetry Teatime

Most recently, we started having the more “official” Tuesday Poetry Teas into our week. I make special drinks and hor d’oeuvres, we enjoy the food, each other’s company, and poetry. Each person takes several turns (if they want) choosing and reading aloud a poetry selection.

Poetry Teatime

We knew that we wanted our poetry times to incorporate the things that we value and prioritize in our family – togetherness, beauty, simplicity, and health. I own 2 platters/stands (as seen in the pictures), and my husband made a cake stand out of some of our firewood (which serves as a decorative stand for our emergency candles when not used for parties), and the jars pictured serve as functional storage when needed, or as decoration in their “off time” from parties.

We are so very thankful for Brave Writer, and for how seamlessly the BW lifestyle matches who we are as a family, and how we live our lives.

Poetry Teatime: On Friday

Poetry Teatime

“Tuesday” Teatime has been a part of our homeschooling for many years. By no means do we do it every week and definitely not on Tuesday but usually on Friday as we find it a pleasant way to end the week.

From the very beginning I knew that it would not happen if I had to come up with the “tea.” So we are found casually strolling, dashing to avoid raindrops, or slipping and sliding on ice around the corner to our neighborhood coffee shop to drink chai, hot chocolate, juice or whatever suits our fancy for the day..

In the beginning I did all of the reading, a couple of poems and the rest from our current read aloud or two. Gradually the kids began to pick up the books. On this pleasant day they shared poems from Winter Poems, Poems to Learn by Heart, and Flamingos on the Roof.

Poetry Teatime: Diamante Poems!

How to Write Diamante Poems

Hi Julie!

We had such fun with our tea time and poetry share today! We have been talking about diamante poems, so the kids shared some of their creations while we enjoyed herbal tea and snacks.

My oldest two wrote synonym poems, using the following format:

Noun
Adjective, Adjective
Verb, Verb, Verb
Noun, Noun, Noun, Noun
Verb, Verb, Verb
Adjective, Adjective
Noun

Poetry Teatime

The kids started by brainstorming adjectives, nouns and verbs for their poems, which I jotted down for them grouped by word type. Then they went through their lists, chose the words they liked best, and wrote their poems. It was so much fun! Here’s what they came up with:

Minecraft, by Eamonn (9 yrs)

Minecraft
fun, exhilarating
learning, thinking, bonding
mods, stones, houses, blocks
building, exploring, playing
challenging, peaceful
Minecraft

Books, by Fallon (11 yrs)

Books
exciting, hilarious
reading, thinking, imagining
mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, reference
wishing, laughing, hypothesizing
different, fast-paced
Novels

I’ve also included a photo of my four kidlets as they sipped tea while big sis read out some favourite poems.

Thanks for always inspiring us with fun ways to create and explore with words!

Warmly,
Melanie

Poetry Teatime: Three for tea

Poetry TeatimeI have 3 kids homeschooling right now– 2 girls ages 13 and 10 and an 8 year old boy.

I have a collection of teacups and everyone loves choosing their cup for the day. My 10 year old likes to plan the treat which has varied from peanut butter and jelly sandwich triangles to freshly baked banana bread. However simple the snack is we always set it out on pretty serving plates.

Our poetry collection at this point is mostly Shel Silverstein and they happily dive in to each choose a poem to share. At first my son was reluctant because it seemed ‘girly’ but he has had a great time and has even helped make up some of the treats.

We have had some great conversations but my favorite thing about poetry teatime is that I feel free to sit down and just enjoy a treat with my children- no guilt.

Poetry Teatime: Makes everything better

Poetry TeatimeWhen we have tea it is usually with our breakfast. (Notice the crazy bed hair in the pic.) We enjoy powdered doughnuts, and pastries. We do read poetry at times, but this is often when we choose to do our daily read aloud.

The funny thing is that I really intend this to be for my 10 year old, but it’s my 5 year old that begs for tea time! She wants to have tea everyday. I recently went on a family vacation and came across the most beautiful tea set in a little gift shop. I bought it to add to our excitement. Tea time has been such a fun addition to our schooling.

Tea and snacks make everything even better.
