A Brave Writer's Life in Brief

Choose a work of art to observe. Hold it in your hands. Look at it quietly and intently for a few minutes. Look in the corners. What is the subject? Where is the subject located? Notice the color palette: warm or cool, bright or subdued, heavy contrasts or gentle blends. Why is the painting interesting? What might the artist wish to convey?

Now set the timer for ten or fifteen minutes and let yourself write in any direction you find yourself going.
