    I had to comment and say thank you. This was our second attempt at the Friday Freewrite ~ the first attempt didn’t go so well; my son (age 9) ended up in tears because he just didn’t know what to write. This time I relaxed and did away with the timer and rules of keeping the pencil going and he produced this:
    “I woold give 20 bilyin dolers to my dad, so he could pay off the farm and his truck and never havto go to werck agen.”
    He just turned 9 last month and writing has been such a battle ~ he is very, very allergic to pencils. We were working on his spelling with “Spelling Power” but we have quit because he can spell words right on his spelling test but miss them every time in any writing he produces (which isn’t much) ~ so I have backed off the spelling and figure we will revisit this subject if needed in about 3 years. He does copywork almost daily and is currently learning cursive writing.
    Anyway, I know this sample of his writing isn’t huge and is full of spelling errors ~ but, it came from his mind, without any tears and he actually enjoyed the assignment (honest ~ he was smiling while he wrote)!
