Friday Freewrite: Anaphora
Anaphora is a literary device or technique where a number of phrases begin with the same word or words, like:
- “Mad world! Mad kings! Mad composition!” – King John II, William Shakespeare
- “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.” – A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens
- “Monkey see, monkey do.”
Writers might use anaphora to express a strong feeling, emphasize a point, give rhythm or structure to a list, or make an idea easy to remember.
Now it’s your turn! Create a few phrases using anaphora, and choose some of these words to repeat (or think of your own):

- A candle
- Stinky
