Poetry Teatime: Weekly ritual

Poetry Teatime

Our family is enjoying Poetry Teatime so much. My kids look forward to it all week.

This week, we invited a friend to participate along with us. My four year old loves selecting poems, and even though he isn’t reading yet, has memorized a number of poems and proudly “reads” them to the rest of us.

We have family favorites that get read each Teatime. Hungry Mungry is a big hit right now, and we love discovering new books of poetry from the library and our thrift store!

Thank you for giving us this weekly ritual. I hope it is something my children remember fondly into their adulthood.

Poetry Teatime: Rose garden tea

Rose Garden Poetry Teatime

Poetry tea has quickly become one of our cherished home school times!

Our poetry tea in the rose garden has been our favorite so far. My mom was quick to join in the fun when I shared the vision of Poetry Tea Times. There is a gem of a rose garden blocks from my parents house. In late September and early October, the roses are in bloom.

My mom met us at the garden with a beautiful tea party on a quilt. We enjoyed tea and goodies, and shared a couple of poems about flowers. The kids then explored all the different roses, and chose a few of their favorites for me to take a picture of.

They made up a pretend game, and were enjoying the beautiful day, and the company of each other. I was even able to have a few moments of complete conversation with my mom!

Poetry Teatime: The dolls joined as well

Poetry Teatime

Here’s a picture from our first poetry and tea time. My girls loved it!

My youngest insisted on using a teeny tiny paint-your-own tea cup set she received as a gift. The dolls joined us as well. Though I don’t put it on the calendar all the time, we have such good memories from that first time. We are planning on another for this Friday.

The best part for me was that I found I enjoy poetry much more than I realized I would.

Blessings,

Sarah

Poetry Teatime: Dreamy

Poetry Teatime

Hi, Julie,

Thank you so much for the wonderful idea of poetry teatimes; we’ve been loving this new addition to our week. I run a family child care program as well as homeschooling my 6-year-old daughter. This year, I dropped down to only 3 kids enrolled on Mondays, so we can all fit into my car. We’ve been going hiking those mornings, coming home for nap, and getting up to have poetry teatime. What a dreamy day!

Here’s a photo from yesterday’s teatime. I don’t usually crowd the table so much, but my daughter wanted to prominently display all the (slightly burned) popovers, because “you bake the best things, mama!” She is making her “proper British face” to go with the tea, while 2-year-old Josie wonders what the heck she’s doing.

Another favorite part of the photo: “The Big Golden Book of Little Verses,” a vintage copy which I gave her as a Christmas gift after we saw a Mary Blair exhibit at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. She was thrilled with it. Like the baking, it’s all tied to warm, connected memories.

Poetry Teatime: Special Time

Poetry Teatime

Inspired by Brave Writer, I started doing poetry tea times with my kids a few weeks ago. It’s turned into one of our favorite times together during the week.

I pull out different poetry books for the kids to look through and pick from. My readers choose new poems or old favorites to read to us and my younger nonreaders pick out poems that I read aloud for them.

My kids are finding a love for poetry through these special times and we are enjoying special time together.

Thanks for the inspiration Brave Writer!

Alison
